Alex Strachan
Horn, Principal Member Since 2016 Alex Strachan has been making music since he was 4, first on the violin and later on his life long love, the horn. While at Johns Hopkins, he studied with Larry Williams of the Peabody Institute. Since moving to San Francisco and meeting his wife he's returned to organized music and been with the Oakland Civic Orchestra ever since. Other ensembles Alex has performed with include Opus Oakland, Oakland Brass, The San Francisco Philharmonic, The San Francisco Civic M2M, Awesöme Orchestra, The Palo Alto Philharmonic, The Symphony of the Potomac, The Peabody Wind Ensemble, and The Hopkins Symphony Orchestra & Wind Ensemble. He's also preparing to give the world premier of Nico Umar-Durr's horn concerto with the OCO in the upcoming 2023-2024 season. Alex has also recently ventured into conducting, helping the OCO prepare for rehearsals and serving as a guest conductor for the Castro Valley Orchestra. Alex maintains an alarmingly large collection of horns including an several from the 19th century and a small fleet of ascending-system Alexanders. Outside of music, he enjoys exploring the food scene with his wife and hanging out with his overly enthusiastic husky mix. |
